What Causes Erectile Dysfunction ?


Erectile Dysfunction is said to be an inability to achieve erection sufficient for mutually satisfying intercourse. when a man can’t get and keep an erection long enough to have sex on at least 50% of tries. Sometimes a combination of physical and psychological issues cause erectile dysfunction. If a person is found to be having ED has maximum chances of getting in depression and anxiety. So it become very necessary to treat ED at any cost.

As said “prevention is better then cure” , it is better to beware of ED before. To prevent or to avoid we need to understand that what are those factors that develops Erectile Dysfunction condition. There are many and many more factors that causes erection problem. There are many physical and psychological causes of erectile dysfunction. We need to understand them in detail.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction: There are four main causes of erectile dysfunction .

  • Health (metabolic) problems
  • Psychosocial issues
  • Interference by medication, alcohol and other drugs
  • Urological problems:

1. Serious health (metabolic) problems:

Diabetes- This is because of the fact that nerves and blood supply in the erectile tissue usually are harmed. About 60% of men with diabetes experience impotence.

High blood pressure- High blood pressure can cause your blood vessels to stiffen or narrow. This can restrict the flow of blood to your penis, leading to erectile dysfunction.

Obesity- It’s estimated that almost half of the men in this country have problems with erectile dysfunction and over three-quarters that do are overweight or obese.

Chronic renal failure- Patients with chronic renal failure often present to the ED with an unrelated condition. In these cases, the level of renal function may have important implications for diagnosis and treatment.

High cholesterol- When the bad cholesterol (ldl) builds up, it builds plaque in the walls of arteries and results in smaller opening for blood to pass through. Because the penis gets less blood flow which is not enough to make a good erection, you start experiencing Male Impotence.

Sleep apnea- sleep apnea causes a stress response that upsets the relative balance that’s needed for proper sexual functioning.

Hormonal problems: Low levels of the male hormone testosterone can result in ED.

2. Psychosocial issues:

Performance anxiety- When a man is anxious about his sexual performance, his erectile function can be affected

Relationship problems- Tensions with your sexual partner, whether related to sexual issues or others, such as financial or family problems, can negatively affect sexual function.

Depression- Depression can contribute to erectile dysfunction. Men who experience erectile dysfunction because of a physical cause may also feel depressed, stressed, or anxious.

Employment and financial pressures- Due to to financial pressure sometimes many men feel depressed and stressed and these leads to erectile dysfunction.

Situational psychological problems-  Some men have problems only in certain situations or with certain people.

3. Interference by medication, alcohol and other drugs:

Alcohol- Chronic alcoholism can produce erectile difficulties, even if there is no alcohol in the blood at the time of sex.

Smoking- Men who smoke have a greater chance of developing ED than men who don’t smoke, according to a targeted clinical study.

Drugs-Over more then 200 commonly prescribed drugs are known to cause or contribute to impotence, including drugs for high blood pressure, heart medications, antidepressants, tranquilizers, and sedatives.

4. Urological problems:

Peyronie’s Disease- This disease causes fibres and plaques to appear in the genitals, interrupting blood flow.

Pelvic fracture- A past pelvic fracture which has blocked one of the arteries carrying blood to the penis may also cause erection problems.
